About the Talk

How Do Chinese Companies Go from Followers to Leaders? Unlocking the Four Stages of Capability Growth in the EV Industry

Companies from emerging economies such as China have long been considered latecomers in global competition. But is there a path for these latecomers to catch up and even become leaders in the global market? How exactly do companies from countries like China go from being followers to becoming global leaders?

Using China's automotive supply sector as a real-world example, we trace its transition from internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicles (EV). Through this case, we show how Chinese companies evolve from latecomers to leaders by following a four-stage model moving from learning existing knowledge from advanced multinational firms to eventually contributing their own innovations back to the global market.

While our study focuses on the EV industry, the model offers actionable insights far beyond it. For firms, policymakers, and supply chain stakeholders navigating technological shifts in energy, manufacturing, and high-tech sectors worldwide, these four stages provide a roadmap for transformation in times of change.

About the Speaker

Prof Abby Zhou

Professor of International Business and Strategy, UNNC

Dr Abby Zhou is a Professor of International Business and Strategy at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. Her research broadly covers EMNEs, knowledge, and innovation in international business. She has held visiting positions at Aalto University Business School, Finland. She served as a Senior Editor of Management and Organization Review and is on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Management Studies and Journal of International Management. Her research has been published in journals including the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, and Journal of World Business, among others.
